If you are going through a divorce, it’s very easy to slip out of your normal self-care routine. People may quit going to the gym or playing tennis at the club because they hate the pitying glances they perceive they get from other members who are aware of their circumstances.
This is detrimental to both physical and mental health, however. Read more below about how to maintain your self-care routine while going through the divorce process.
Divorce can sap your energy supply
There are only 24 hours in a day, and those experiencing solo parenting for the first time often get overwhelmed by the responsibilities of jobs, kids and maintaining their households. You could argue that there just is no time to allot for self-care.
But that’s a false premise and neglecting yourself is never good. That’s why it’s better to carve out a block of time to get a massage, manicure or play that round of golf with your usual foursome during the divorce process.
Treat yourself at least weekly
While it’s never healthy to scarf down ice cream by the half-gallon, arranging to meet a friend for a weekly fro-yo cone gives you a chance to decompress and a safe space to vent when necessary.
Staying in touch with friends can also be very grounding when divorce leads to spiraling. Not into sweets? Meeting up with your friends for margaritas or a couple of rounds of beers can be relaxing as long as you don’t overdrink.
Maintain your spirit as well as your body
Divorce can be gut-wrenching, especially when you want to remain in your marriage. If you are too off-kilter to manage your life, it might be time to arrange some sessions with a therapist who treats patients in the throes of divorce. Your legal team may have some referrals for you to choose the best fit.
