Divorce is tremendously tricky, no matter how you cut it. Whether there are children involved or it’s just the two of you, it is one of the most challenging times in a person’s life, and the longer you have been married, the more complex the split can be.

Add to that lots of assets and perhaps a bit of contention because of that, and you may have a ticking bomb in your hands. What do you do? How do you solve this without it becoming a fight?

Mediation

Here’s where mediation comes in. Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution that aims to help parties settle divorce matters outside of court.

Why mediation?

Many people, including high-asset individuals, choose mediation for several vital reasons. Among them are:

  • Mediation is private and confidential, whereas the court process is not.
  • Mediation is less time-consuming, and you can finish the divorce process faster.
  • Mediation will cost you less money than having a drawn-out divorce fight in court.

Of course, sometimes going to court is necessary. In those cases, having a skilled attorney handle your case is imperative. Mediation is highly effective in other cases, but it requires certain elements. For example, the participating parties must have the same goal: reaching an agreement.

Even though any party can change their mind and choose to go to court instead, it is helpful if both parties come to mediation wanting to work things out then and there. Cooperation leads to collaboration, which leads to an environment where the parties can hopefully develop solutions.
