Q&A with Los Angeles Family Law Attorney Maya Galicia-Canto
What motivates you to work in your field?
I have always been interested in family law because of its inherent practicality. As an attorney, it is always interesting to grapple with big ideas like “equity” and “justice,” but family law also allows me to look at the law and life logistically. I like being able to make an impact in my clients’ everyday lives, whether it be getting a family on a set schedule so their lives can flow smoother or establishing how expenses will be paid so clients can focus on the wellbeing of their families as well as themselves.
Do you have siblings?
I am the oldest of four siblings and part of a blended family.
What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show?
My favorite book is Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I love the themes of passion versus practicality, second marriages, and the importance of siblings. It also has a blended family at the heart of the story which likely appealed to my interest in family law long before I became a practicing attorney.
What challenges do you enjoy tackling in your field?
I love the challenge of taking on a complicated case, identifying the core issues, and working with clients to resolve those issues.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
My two biggest interests are books and coffee. I am happiest whenever I am in a bookstore with a coffee in hand.
