SERVING SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S HIGH-ASSET DIVORCE NEEDS

The problem with using social media while divorcing

If you are a regular poster on social media you might want to continue using it during your divorce. That could turn out to be a bad idea.

The safest solution is to take a break from social media until the divorce is finalized. Here is why:

You could post something your spouse could use against you

Have you blocked your spouse from seeing all your social media accounts? Maybe you have, but that does not mean they might not still be able to see something you post or something posted about you. They might still be Facebook friends with one of your friends. Or you might still be connected to one of their friends or family on another social media site.

Let’s say you venture out with a group of friends to commiserate the fact your marriage is over. Perhaps you pick up your phone and write something after a few too many drinks. Your spouse could screenshot it and show it in divorce court.

It does not have to be anything inherently bad

Posting about how you hope your spouse dies in a car crash or about how you are thinking of grabbing the kids and running away to another state could clearly be problematic. But even entirely innocent things could prove troublesome.

For example, you post a photo of yourself out with work colleagues. In all the photos, you are standing next to one particular colleague who your spouse has long suspected you of having an affair with. You didn’t but the mere sight of you next to them entrenches this belief deeper in your spouse’s mind and causes them to adopt a more hostile stance in divorce negotiations.

Learning more about the dos and don’ts to protect your interests is wise if you are about to divorce.
